The building was built in 1858, and served as a Russian pilgrims’ hospice
for women. During the British mandate in Palestine (1918-1948), the building
was used as the central prison. Apart from criminal prisoners, hundreds of
Jewish underground fighters were imprisoned there, members of Haganah, Irgun
and Lechi (the Stern Group).
