Hanns Martin Elster
writer & National Socialist

When on 11th December 1933, in infinite naivety, the Jewish writer Werfel applied for admission to the »Third Reich Association of German Writers«, for which he even submitted a declaration of loyalty to the Hitler regime, he had to be told, despite being recommended by his writer colleague Hanns Martin Elster, that there was no longer a place for Jews in German literature. Werfel never recovered from the loss of his identity as a writer.
